Udyog Aadhaar was the old MSME registration system (2015–2020). Udyam Registration replaced it on 1 July 2020. Old Udyog Aadhaar certificates are no longer accepted for government scheme benefits, bank loans, or tender eligibility. If you have an old certificate, you must re-register on the Udyam portal.
Millions of Indian businesses registered on the Udyog Aadhaar portal between 2015 and 2020. In 2020, the Government of India completely revamped the MSME registration system with the launch of Udyam Registration. The two systems are not compatible — Udyog Aadhaar holders must migrate to Udyam to access current MSME benefits.
Udyog Aadhaar was a simple self-declaration-based MSME registration introduced in 2015. It required only Aadhaar number and basic business details. Over 80 lakh businesses registered under this system. Since July 2020, it has been phased out and old certificates are not valid for current schemes.
Udyam Registration replaced Udyog Aadhaar on 1 July 2020. It uses Aadhaar-based authentication and is integrated with GST, Income Tax, and PAN databases for automatic verification. The Udyam certificate is permanent, digitally signed, and has a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN).

The formal migration deadline passed. All Udyog Aadhaar registrations are now effectively deactivated for the purpose of accessing MSME benefits. You should register on the Udyam portal as soon as possible — there is no penalty for late registration, but you continue to miss out on benefits until you do.
Yes. When you register on the Udyam portal, you receive a new unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) formatted as UDYAM-XX-00-0000000. Your old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum number is not retained. The new URN is what you use for all purposes going forward.
Yes — use the same Aadhaar number. For proprietorships, the proprietor's Aadhaar is used directly. For companies and LLPs, the authorised signatory's Aadhaar is used along with the entity's PAN. The system automatically fetches business details from GST/IT databases.
Udyam registration is largely paperless. You need: Aadhaar number, PAN card number, and bank account details. Business details like turnover and investment are auto-filled from GST and Income Tax records. A declaration of self-certification of the information is required.
